Winter Bird

Originating from the early 1970's, this table has lived its life in an apartment in Copenhagen. A house clearing company bought the personal chattels of the apartment and the table ended up in a lot with other furniture.

Thinking it would be a prosperous idea, 3 friends bought the lot and started selling the furniture on online marketplaces. Not much was sold, they gave up the project, and most of the lot ended up in a musty basement in Copenhagen.

I met one of the guys at a pub, and told him about my furniture. "I have a table that I want to give you" and that's the tale of this table.

The process

This table was almost 2 years underway. Even with the amazing demo sketch by Rasmus Balstrøm, the creativity on my part was challenged until the day a bird fell from the sky during a walk with my neighbour.

On the ground, just next to the forest path, she spotted a small bird. I picked him up, his neck was broken, and his body was still warm. I brought him home, I smoothed down the small feathers by his neck and put him carefully in my freezer.

I contacted a taxidermist to find out how best to dry a bird and was advised that freeze drying was the best method. I should expect to wait about 6 months, he told me, and the rule of thumb was that an animal is dry when it has lost 25% of its body weight. This little bird weighed 17 grams.

During the waiting time, my cat caught and delivered 2 small birds. Not so pretty at all, but I put them in my freezer so they could be practice birds. I had to muster a bit of courage to get over the queasy feelings about it all.

In the end, this story may seem irrelevant, since the beautiful dead bird hasn’t made it into the table. Instead you get a copper leaf that I made 20 years ago for a candlestick. The copper now holds a ½ coconut that one of my kids made 10 years ago, and that has hung outside my kitchen window since, filled with seeds for the birds. The OSMO hard wax oil that I use is approved for children's toys, so there is no need to worry if your child decides to do a taste test.

DEMO
SKETCHES

Balstrøm

I told my friend, Rasmus Balstrøm, about this idea of making graffiti tables. To support me in my idea, Rasmus did some quick demo sketches for me to work with. I am very appreciative that he squeezed in the time in his packed schedule. Rasmus' quick demo sketches have been very inspiring to my creative process!

Thank you for your support Rasmus!
