Chlorophyll

A worm-eaten oak table from France, numbered 222341, was bought by an artist and her husband for their open kitchen in their thatched farmhouse overlooking Roskilde Fjord.

It weighs a ton with the thick oak framing the centerboards. The worm holes were there when they bought it, but the myriads of paint stains were not. This coffee table is one of the extensions to a massive dining table.

The process

There is a predecessor to this table. It's not the same design, but it was a prototype for this table, to test the oak in different environments.

My sister has the first of the tables and I tested it with water-based lacquer. In her apartment it stood in direct sunlight. A year passed, and as can be expected of all wood, it expands and contracts due to humidity, which means that joints can be felt as time passes, that's normal. But the lacquer required much to be desired. It was yellowed, cracked in the joints and candle wax was difficult to remove. This resulted in new testing of which surface treatments are best in terms of removal of wax. Learning something new every day is the joy of the job. Also for this table, OSMO hard wax oil has been used for its durability, water resistancy, ease of removing wax and it's a safe surface treatment that even is approved for use on children's toys.
